Local Firefighter Receives
National Recognition for
Donor Recruitment Campaign
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Terry
Dennis received national recognition from the American Association of Blood
Banks during the association's annual meeting in Orlando, Florida this past
October. Dennis was awarded the 2002 President’s Award from then-President,
Dale Malloy.
A long time supporter of Florida Georgia Blood
Alliance and an advocate for blood donations, Dennis
realized that he and fellow firefighters often have
the opportunity to save someone’s life more than once.
They respond to rescue calls, and they donate blood,
which is often needed by the victims of fires, auto
accidents, and other life-threatening situations.
The idea of needing the blood to be there for these
victims is the basis of Dennis’ national campaign,
Twice Saved. With the assistance of Marilyn Kendeigh,
Blood Alliance Senior Donor Consultant, Dennis
presented his concept to the American Association of
Blood Banks and the Association of Donor Recruitment Professionals.
The two groups loved the idea, and with funding from Jacksonville’s
own Vistakon, helped to make the concept a reality.
"Terry’s energy and enthusiasm as a donor himself is a
model for others, and he is now spreading that energy throughout the nation,” says
Malloy, who sees Twice Saved as an excellent way to educate others about the
need for blood donations.
“Twice Saved is a wonderful vehicle for getting this
message to all who will listen," Malloy explains.
Dennis initially took on the causes of organ and blood
donation when his son, Matt, needed a heart
transplant. At the time, Matt was only three years
old, and Florida’s youngest heart transplant
recipient.
